Is Chemical Peeling Worth It?
The Truth About Chemical Peels, Their Types and Benefits.
Maybe you’ve heard more and more people talking about the benefits of chemical peels. At the same time, there are also plenty of people that complain about this procedure. Either because it hasn’t offered them the expected results, or because it has caused them some sort of skin damage. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Chemical peels are often deemed a good alternative to surgery when it comes to anti-ageing procedures, but as with any kind of facial treatment there are always risks. Meaning the chemical peel can be a great treatment if done correctly. However, it can also have its risks, which you should be aware of before attempting this procedure. Here we explore what is chemical peeling?
1. Light Peels
Light peels are the most gentle form of chemical peels also known as superficial peel. You can get one in a dermatologist’s office and it takes about half an hour. It eliminates only the first skin layer, so it is not at all complicated or dangerous in any way. However, at the same time, you shouldn’t expect extraordinary results. Usually, this type of peel is used for slight skin discoloration or on areas where the skin is a bit rougher. You can also use it to make your face, neck, or hands look younger and more refreshed. Remember that its effect does not last for so long. So you will have to repeat the procedure every two to five weeks to make sure the effects are long-lasting.
Below are the most common types of superficial peels. Also, the acids in this category are the ones used in skincare products. But with significantly lower concentrations, of course. Light
2. Medium Peels
A medium peel is more aggressive than a light peel. You usually don’t get these during your lunch break. The recovery can take up to 10 days, but irritation and redness may linger for several months. The most common medium-depth peel is TCA peel. The results of a medium peel can last for 2 to 4 months at a time right from the start and can last 6 months or a little more after repeated treatments. You will notice a visible improvement in your skin after one peel, but best results are obtained with multiple treatments over time
3. Deep Peels
If you have deeper facial wrinkles, skin that’s damaged by the sun, scars, areas that appear blotchy or even pre-cancerous growths, deep facial chemical peels might be the right choice for you. Your provider will carefully determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment.
Deep peels give drastic results but the recovery time is too intimidating and can be painful. Patients typically can return to work and some of your normal activities two weeks after treatment. Deep chemical facial peels will result in peeling, crusting, skin redness and discomfort for several days to weeks. Your doctor will provide painkillers to keep you comfortable.
Compared to light and medium options, deep chemical peels have more long-lasting and dramatic results that can last up to 10 years.
